HERSTORY

I was born to be a creative. Whether I was drawing a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. with crayons in 1st grade or creating a Punnet Square diagram in biology class using cartoon characters, I have always been good with my hands. I love the way mechanical pencils glide over Strathmore drawing paper and how acrylic paint adheres to canvas. I became a fashion designer the day my mother showed me how to thread her 1980's Singer home sewing machine.  I took a class on how to use an industrial machine and SURPRISE, I got one as a graduation gift from my cousin. As a result of my determination and supportive family members', I grew into the designer I am today.

Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we're supposed to be and embracing who we are.

THE MISSION

Mercy by Nk was founded by Nkechi N. Okonkwo in 2013. The company was named after Marcellina "Mercy" Azinge, the designer's maternal grandmother. On June 18th, 2020, Mercy passed away, leaving behind legacy of strength, wisdom and compassion for others. All of which drive Ms. Okonkwo to create a cross-cultural, socially responsible company that positively contributes to the minority communities she is surrounded by.

THE COLLECTION

Being a first-generation Nigerian-American in your family, sometimes you never have a real link to Nigerian culture beyond going to camp and learning a few words or phrases. On my quest for a deeper connection, I started Mercy 1932 ® in 2013, dedicating it to my grandmother Marcellina “Mercy” Azinge. I use my passion for design and my grandmother’s influence to fuse my American styling with Ankara materials to create garments that express who I am. Over the years, I have grown into a designer that creates with her entire being. I focus my energy on providing the best quality pieces I have to offer. Mixing and matching materials has allowed me to expand my creativity giving each piece their own flavor. I created my own lifelong connection to Nigerian-American culture which continues to fortify as like-minded individuals contribute to it.
